Chapter Seven
The dream was vivid, as it always was. Jax could taste the recent rain in the air as well as the blood from the dead on the ground. The smoke from her burning village hung in the sky. They would salt the earth before they were done. The Romans were here to destroy everything pure and good. They would kill her Goddess if they could, replacing Her with Caesar.
As always, the pain in her thigh from the arrow brought her down, leaning on a spear. She was the last to fall. She had killed many and her blood mingled with theirs on her body. The blood, it was always about the blood. Her blood ran into the ground, lapped up by the Goddess. The praetorian drew his sword. She barely felt the blow, could not block it. She had lost too much and her strength failed her.
As she fell the flower, the white Star of David, rose toward her from the ground and filled her vision, bringing with it the voice that had been in the last dream, the voice that filled the world and crowded everything else out. The voice of her Goddess. âBring back my broken son. Bring back my Thomas.â

Jax woke with a start. For the second time in less than twenty-four hours, she was waking up in a strange place, with no memory of how she got there. That had to stop. And what was up with the change in her dream? What the fuck did that mean? Her head felt light and she was dizzy when she tried to sit up, immediately falling back into the pile of wool and pillows that she was lying in.
âWhoa there, little soldier! We arenât getting up yet.â Rohanâs large hand reached over and gently touched her forehead. âYou, my love, have got to be hungry.â He pulled the wads of fabric and wool behind her and helped her sit, then scooted in so that she was propped on his chest with his thick thighs on either side of her. The man was enormous. Each thigh was almost as big around as her waist. She still felt so weak, but everywhere his skin touched her she felt a tingle of desire. Jax decided to go with it. She had indeed had a hard couple of days and could use a bit of pampering, even if it was in some sort of underground⦠Where the hell were they? She raised her head a little and glanced around. She spotted a bustling figure no more than three feet high come hobbling toward them. It looked like a pile of rags and leaves come to life, and if she hadnât also seen two bright eyes peeking out of a wrinkled smiling face, Jax might have thought that it was indeed that.
The little creature had a bowl of something that smelled incredible, which she then handed to Rohan. Jax felt her mouth begin to water. Drat. The eating machine got it first.
